Feds to purchase $285 mn US in Fuel-Efficient American cars (G&C, Leg. & Reg., Funding)

President Obama ordered the US General Services Administration (GSA) to purchase 17,600 US-made fuel efficient vehicles -- including 2,500 hybrid sedans -- by June 1, 2009. The goal of the $285 million procurement is to replace each vehicle with another that achieves at least 10% better fuel mileage, which should reduce federal gasoline consumption by 1.3 million gallons annually. Separately, the GSA will spend $15 million for advanced vehicle tests within its fleet, including CNG and hybrid buses and EVs.
